The most authentic Ibiza: discover the tradition of the Ball Pagès
Ibiza retains a deep-rooted cultural heritage that is part of its identity.
Among its most representative traditions we find the ball pagès, a traditional dance that combines music, clothing and movement in a unique cultural expression. Declared an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest, this dance is still alive thanks to the colles – folkloric groups – that perform it at popular festivals and local celebrations.
To discover the ball pagès is to get closer to the most authentic Ibiza, the one that keeps its traditions alive generation after generation.
The ball pagès: a dance with centuries of history

The ball pagès is the traditional dance ensemble of the Pitiusas and is part of Ibiza's oldest cultural legacy. It emerged in the rural environment and for centuries it was danced in country houses and community celebrations linked to daily life, such as parties, family gatherings or agricultural work.
One of its most distinctive characteristics is the difference between the roles of men and women in dance. The dancer maintains an elegant and restrained posture, with short steps that describe circles on the floor. The dancer, on the other hand, moves with more energy and freedom, jumping, spinning and marking the rhythm with large castanets.
The music that accompanies the dance is also part of its identity: the drum, the three-hole flute and the castanyoles create an unmistakable sound that has remained practically intact over time.
Today, thanks to the colles de ball pagès, this tradition continues to be passed down to new generations and remains one of the most important cultural symbols of the island.
Modalities of the ball pagès: rhythm and symbolism

Ball pagès includes different modalities, each with its own rhythm and character.
One of them is "la curta", a slower dance that was traditionally used to start or close the celebrations. In contrast, "la llarga" is much more dynamic: the dancer performs jumps and vigorous movements while the dancer maintains her elegance with fast, circular steps.
Another variant is "sa filera", where a man dances with several women lined up, approaching each one following the rhythm of the music.
Finally, "ses nou rodades" or "ses dotze rodades" stands out, a dance with a strong ritual symbolism. Its circular turns can represent the nine months of pregnancy or the twelve months of the year and it is one of the few modalities where there is a slight contact between the dancers.
Each of these dances reflects the cultural and symbolic richness of Pitiusa's folklore.
Where to enjoy ball pagès in Ibiza

The ball pagès is still very present in the cultural life of Ibiza and is part of the island's festive calendar.
It is common to see it during the patron saint festivities of many villages, where the colles turn the squares into authentic scenes of tradition.
Also during the summer, exhibitions are organized in church courtyards or squares, designed for both residents and visitors who want to get closer to the local culture.
Witnessing a ball pagès performance is much more than enjoying a traditional dance: it is connecting with centuries of history, identity and cultural pride that are still part of the soul of Ibiza.
