At first he worked as a receptionist, until he had gained enough experience and business vision in destinations such as Jamaica and Mexico. In 2009, he decided to take the plunge by starting up a new hotel company os his ow, based on the firm conviction that tourism could be done differently, with a horizontal, responsible, open eclectic and timeless apporach.
Tell us, Marc, what do you see as the most important aspect in the development of luxury tourism on the island in recent years?
From my point of view, there’s more to luxury than ostentation and extravagance: its essence lies in quality. Obviously, everyone has their own idea of what constitutes luxury; for me, it is space and silence, which are ever more difficult to find in this globalised world. But Ibiza, despite what one might think, also offers moments of silence and space.Personally, I argue for preserving the essence of our identity in Ibiza, and working tirelessly towards being an inclusive, respectful and innovative destination.
What strengths does the island have in comparison with other destinations?
It is a place that has all the ingredients needed to continue being one of the world’s most sought-after destinations. The island’s natural beauty, its local gastronomy, its culture, traditions and open character have made Ibiza unique. On this island, all kinds of people co-exist, creating a climate of diversity and tolerance that makes Ibiza unique in the world.
How do you see the island’s future as a tourist destination over the next few years?
Ibiza never fails to surprise us by breathing new life into cultural and gastronomic projects, as well as live music, and by leading the field with pioneering ventures in its nightlife.
What are your favourite things to do in Ibiza?
They range from an early-morning walk gazing at the sea, to enjoying live music with close friends, eating at some of the best places ever, such as Can Pau, Es Cantonet or Ses Boques, to spending a day with my family at any of the island’s wonderful coves.
What is your favourite dish from Ibiza?
“Bullit de peix” [traditional fish stew], or any other fresh, local dish, such as “cuinat” [a vegetable stew], or “borrida ratjada” [skate]. But what I really love is “arròs de matances” [a meat and rice dish], and I love cooking it for my family.
Which song makes you think of Ibiza?
“I’m free” by the Rolling Stones, or any other Ibiza music by UC, of whom I am such a great fan — for example, “Jo tenc una enamorada”, although I also like the version by the Ressonadors.
What sums up luxury in Ibiza for you?
Luxury is the ability to enjoy every day on this island, with its people, its scenery and its culture. For me, that is what defines us, what makes us unique.
