Abel Matutes Prats

Although he was born in Barcelona, Abel Matutes Prats considers himself 100% Ibizan.

After spending his early teenage years in Brussels, while his father worked as a European Commissioner, Abel moved to Madrid to finish secondary school and later earned a degree in Economics from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

He returned to his hometown, Ibiza, to work in the family business and integrated the Group’s resorts in the Caribbean. Later, he obtained an M.B.A. from the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid.

In 2006, Abel Matutes Prats was appointed CEO of Palladium Hotel Group and Vice President of Grupo Empresas Matutes, following in the footsteps of his father, Abel Matutes Juan.

In 2012, he received the Tourism Achievement Medal for Innovation awarded by the Spanish Council of Ministers. This recognition was granted specifically for the new Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel, as well as for his innovative approach, after becoming a key player in the transformation and revitalization of Playa d’en Bossa (Ibiza).

Currently, Abel Matutes Prats serves as President of Palladium Hotel Group, a position he has held since January 2020.

As a father of four children—two boys and two girls—he enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and his dogs. He is a big Premier League fan and also a sports enthusiast, both from the sofa and on the field.

From your experience, how has the concept of “luxury” in Ibiza evolved in recent years?

The concept of luxury has evolved very significantly. Today, it is no longer associated solely with material possessions or ostentation, but with much more intangible values: time, privacy, well-being, and connection with the surroundings.

In Ibiza, luxury is increasingly understood as the opportunity to enjoy the sea, nature, silence, and the island’s authenticity. It is a form of luxury that relates more to quality of life, combining experience, sustainability, and emotion. In my view, contemporary luxury is defined by a balance between excellence and connection with the environment.

As an ambassador of Ibiza Luxury Destination, what is the main message you would like the world to associate with Ibiza today?

I would like Ibiza to be recognized as an authentic and mindful luxury destination, where excellence coexists with simplicity, Mediterranean culture, and respect for the island. Ibiza is much more than leisure: it is heritage, gastronomy, tradition, tolerance, and a lifestyle that invites people to enjoy life calmly and respectfully.

The message is that Ibiza has successfully evolved by focusing on quality, sustainability, and authenticity without losing its essence. It is a destination where luxury is measured not only by exclusivity but by genuine experiences and the ability to create lasting memories connected to the surroundings, making Ibiza a truly unique place

Your family has been actively involved in the island’s tourism development. From your perspective, what do you believe is the balance between exclusivity and mindful tourism?

The balance lies in clearly prioritizing quality and a type of tourism that respects the territory and local culture, while contributing to economic and social prosperity.

Exclusivity should not be seen as something exclusionary, but rather as a way to care for the destination and elevate the standard of the guest experience.

After so many years of experience in high-end hospitality, what do you think a premium client values most today when choosing Ibiza?

Premium clients increasingly value authenticity, personalization, and alignment with their own values. They appreciate excellence in service and seek unique experiences that connect them with the distinctive qualities of our beautiful island.

Ibiza offers this combination: options for every type of traveler, rich cultural experiences, a privileged natural environment, and top-level hotel, gastronomic, and leisure offerings. Nowadays, clients don’t just choose a destination—they choose how they want to experience it, and the island is fully capable of meeting those expectations.

What do you think Ibiza has done well compared to other destinations, and what should it pay special attention to in the coming years?

Ibiza has successfully built and maintained a very recognizable identity, combining modernity with tradition. It has shown great capacity to adapt to new tourism demands, meeting diverse expectations without losing its essence—something not all destinations have been able to achieve. In short, it has achieved a truly unique differentiation.

Looking ahead, the priority for any destination should be the responsible management of growth, including preserving the landscape and fostering harmonious coexistence between locals and visitors. Focusing on a business model based on the quality of experience and service is one of the key factors to ensure sustainable growth over the medium and long term.

As a native of Ibiza, what responsibility do you feel when representing the island to high-end tourism?

I am and feel very much Ibizan, and that sense of identity carries a clear responsibility. Representing Ibiza to high-end tourism means acting with respect, consistency, and commitment to its identity and community.

I am convinced that high-end tourism should be an ally in preserving Ibiza’s well-being. This involves promoting a model that values the natural environment, local culture, and Mediterranean lifestyle, while contributing to prosperity in a balanced and sustainable way. Defending these values is not only a professional responsibility but also a personal one: it is about helping the island maintain its essence for future generations.

Do you still have a favorite spot on the island to unwind, or is that now an ambassador’s secret?

Rather than a specific spot, I would say I have a favorite way of experiencing the island. Ibiza offers countless special places, and at different stages of life, each one finds its own. For me, true relaxation has always been connected to the sea.

Sailing between Ibiza and Formentera, with no plan other than letting time pass, is probably when I feel most connected to the essence of the island. There I find tranquility, silence, and a certain simplicity that contrasts with the professional pace I’m usually immersed in.

It is in that simplicity—looking at the horizon, feeling the sea, and enjoying nature—where I truly find balance. Ibiza has the unique ability to offer sophistication when sought, but also authenticity and calm when needed. And that very contrast, I believe, is part of its magic.

Could you give us a short phrase that sums up Ibiza for you?

Ibiza is time, sea, peace, and family; for me, that is true luxury.
It’s a way to reconnect with my inner self.
